If you are taking birth control pills, either because they were prescribed to deal with polycystic ovary syndrome, or you just want to avoid getting pregnant. It is important to know what are the side effects those pills have on our body.

Birth control pills have micro-dose of hormones that make changes in our bodies, and they prevent our eggs of being fertilized. Taking them doesn’t imply one is infertile but imply the possibility of getting pregnant even while taking them.

Nevertheless, there are other effects that our body goes through that are completely normal when taking these pills. Don’t be afraid! Knowing the symptoms can determine that the cause are a side effect of the pills.

It is important to state that each body reacts differently and that some of these symptoms might or might not ever happen to you.

  • Nausea and headache: New estrogen levels start hormonal anomalies the first 3 months, these include nausea and a slight headache.
  • Swelling and bosom’s hyper sensibility: This might go on for as long as 18 months after having taken the pills. It is a matter of hormones: the increase of water retention and bosom’s hyper sensibility.
  • Mood swings: Depression, anxiety, insomnia… These are some of the mood swings that your body can go through due to the change of hormones in your body. Some women are even in a better mood.
  • Polyphagia: is excessive hunger or increased appetite. When you are told that birth control pills fatten you, it is because they cause anxiety and increase appetite, due to the alteration of the estrogen and progesterone levels.
  • Urinary tract infections:The hormonal change might cause urinary infections.
  • Appearance of spots in the face: It happens to very few people, but there is a possibility that it happens. Change the birth control method and you will see how they will disappear.
  • Reduction of Dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps): Period is regulated, it is shorter and lighter, so it becomes less painful. This is one of the reasons why people with  polycystic ovary are recommended birth control pills.
  • Acne!: No way. Acne appears because of the increase of androgen (male sex hormone). Birth control pills have a high load of female sex hormones to fight back this effect and the also decrease acne. BEWARE: there are people who go through the opposite, and hormone instability generates more acne than expected.
  • Softer and brighter hair: Hormones have a positive impact on our hair… Magic! They make it grow healthier, brighter and renewed.
  • Softer and brighter skin: It gets prettier, brighter and soft when touched.

Taking birth control pills is unnatural to our bodies, though taking them has a positive and a negative side. What has been your experience with the pills?

REMEMBER: Birth control pills are a mechanism against pregnancy, they don’t prevent you from catching a STD. Use protection!
