Raising Vegetarian Kids

Introduce vegetarianism since childhood is a real option for many families, who see this kind of life not just as a healthier way of eating , but also more respectful of the environment. Although is not an easy task , not only for the emotional problems that can come associated with not being able to eat the same as other children in their environment, they are not monitored carefully to make sure they grow as expected despite a diet in which certain foods are restricted .

The main thing when designing  a vegetarian diet for children is to keep an open mind and add as much food as possible , and reinforce the intake of vegetable proteins in order to compensate the ones they avoid when removing sources of animal protein . Unlike veganism , vegetarianism can include many animal foods in the diet , such as honey, eggs , milk and other dairy products like curd , yogurt or cheese.

Tips for feeding a vegetarian child

If you want vegetarian food to meet your child’s nutrient needs and energy , the American Dietetic Association offers some clues :

  • Have frequent meals .
  • Snack between meals.
  • Consume some refined foods (such as fortified breakfast cereals , bread and pasta) and foods rich in unsaturated fat.
  • Emphasize the use of good sources of calcium, iron and zinc together with dietary practices that promote the absorption of zinc and iron from plant foods. (Include foods rich in vitamin C , such as orange or fresh tomatoes).
  • For vegetarian children, it is important to use a reliable source of vitamin B -12.
  • Use vitamin D supplements if there are doubts that the child is synthesizing enough vitamin D , necessary for calcium to be fixed in the bones , due to limited exposure to sunlight.
