What is Monsanto?

Maybe you have transgenic products in your kitchen and you are not aware of it. There are a lot of transgenic product producers, but the biggest is Monsanto: a transnational business in control of over 90% of the total market of transgenic seeds. In a lot of countries, this transnational has one of the first licenses for using experimental transgenic corn.

In order to make profits, Monsanto does whatever it takes: does not hesitate when breaking the law, bribe officials, affect the health of people or pollute the environment. Throughout its history, Monsanto has accumulated a dirty factual record, irregularities and penalties:

  • Produced and marketed the Orange agent used during the Vietnam War and responsible for the death and the development of cancer in thousands of innocent civilians. Orange agent is now banned.
  • Produced and marketed the DDT and PCBs or askarels, chemicals that cause serious damage to human health and the environment. Both are now prohibited.
  • It was ordered to pay $ 1.5 million for bribing Indonesian authorities to introduce transgenic cotton in that country.
  • It was convicted in France in 2006 for misleading advertising about false ecological properties of the herbicide Round Up
  • It was convicted in the U.S. in 2010 to pay $ 2.5 million for more than 1,700 violations of biosafety standards.
