¡Delicioso!

Refresh your home without air conditioning

In these hot days all we want is to get in a pool with ice and freshen up. Neither your kitchen or your living room or your bedroom give you space to relax from the hot steam that’s in the atmosphere and the most “simple” solution is to turn the air conditioning on.

The problem is that these A/Cs generate electricity consumption, making our bills increase, and we also contribute to global warming by the excessive use of these devices. I’m not saying, don’t ever use it, I understand it’s needed sometimes! But there are some greener ways to fight the heat and cool our home spaces. Here I’ll give you some:

  • Reduce lights consumption: lamps, televisions, computers, etc. These tend to overheat the ambient air.
  • Lower the blinds: especially in rooms where more heat comes, and in the hours where it tends to get warmer.
  • Use natural light to illuminate the house day. This prevents home overheating with electric lights.
  • Open the windows where there may be air streams.
  • Avoid steam. Boil things, or ironing can create warm moisture in the environment. If you do it, turn on the extractor or place yourself near a window.
  • Use hand fans: in addition to exercise your arms, you can refresh.

If temperature is too high and you have no air conditioning I’ll give this last tip: Place an ice bucket in front of a fan. That sure will cool the room. Delicious!
