Tocophobia, fear of pregnancy or childbirth

Yeah, I’m pretty sure we all know a friend who is terrified of the word “pregnancy”, such as myself. We look and we assess the reactions and continue with the conversation. The problem occurs when this fear becomes a phobia distressing and frustrating.

¿Toco… what?

Tocophobia, no, not touching anything phobia is the phobia or intense fear of a possible pregnancy or during delivery. According to a study by the British Journal of Psychiatry in 2000, this state arises when the anxiety or fear to die or suffer any harm during pregnancy is so intense that it prevents birth at all costs.

A difficult time for any woman who presents it.

Two options, a phobia

This type of phobia can occur for two different reasons:

  • Primary tocophobia, is the irrational fear of pregnancy that occurs in adolescence, because of poor sex education, pregnant relatives with problems, sexual abuse, among several variants that may cause women to deny and resist the birth experience.
  • Secondary tocophobia, comes after a traumatic birth or after having suffered post natal depression; a great inconvenience when programming another possible pregnancy.

Recommendations

  • The first option is always to seek help from a specialist who can guide your steps to overcome fear.
  • Sharing concerns with your partner can help you view this fear from another point of view and find a friend to hand it over to.
  • Receiving sexual orientation can help you gain insight into the process and helps clear the fear of the unknown, in this case labor.
  • Meditation and relaxation can help you to experience another state of consciousness and reduce stress and nervousness.

In any case, the most beneficial thing you can do if you present this phobia is to recognize and discover you are not alone in this process, and that aid is necessary to overcome it.
