A low level of self-confidence can originate from many sources. An unhappy childhood or poor academic performance growing up are culprits for many people. Others’ lack of self-confidence stems from ongoing stressful events in their current lives. Relationship problems and financial struggles, for instance, can be contributing factors.

The good news is you lack your own self-confidence, and your insecurities do not have to consume you. Read on for 6 tips you can start applying to your life:

1) Start Your Day Right

If you have a low level of self-confidence, you may not be proud of your physical appearance. Combat these negative feelings by starting your day off right.

Wake up on time to pick out a nice outfit. Wear something comfy that makes you feel confident. Dressing well is a major morale booster, as it allows you to assuredly present yourself to the world.

Consider investing in a full-length mirror. The best full-length mirror will be your reminder to stop and give yourself positive affirmations every morning before you go about your day.

Repeat affirmations like these to yourself:

I’m worthy and valuable!

I love my height/weight/hair color/eye color!

I matter to the people in my life!

Make it a goal to repeat these mantras daily. At first, you may feel awkward or like you’re faking it. Over time, these affirmations will develop into steadfast beliefs.

2) Think Positive

This one goes hand-in-hand with tip #1. Throughout the day, you should train yourself to think positive thoughts.

Learn how to recognize the good in every situation. Optimism can go a long way. Find joy and humor in everyday life. Tell yourself you are good enough. Encourage yourself to push through self-doubt. Remind yourself to not give up.

Especially if you aren’t used to positive thinking, it can take a while to train yourself. Keep practicing; the persistence will pay off.

3) Eliminate Negative Thoughts

It’s not enough to just think positively. Sometimes this won’t always work. Try to eliminate negative thoughts. Thinking that you can’t do something will only convince yourself that you can’t.

Remind yourself that you are more than capable. We are often our own worst critics. Silence the doubtful voice in your head with self-affirmations.

4) Get to the Root of the Problem

If you are struggling with the above tips, take a look inwards. Understand why you are struggling. By getting to the root cause, you’ll be able to better overcome your insecurities.

5) Do Things Outside of Your Comfort Zone

If certain apprehensions or fears are placing limits on your life, you can stop them. Take action by doing things outside of your comfort zone. Here are a few examples:

  • Join a new club by yourself. This way, you’ll develop your social skills and meet new people without relying on already-established connections.
  • Invite your new neighbors over. Even if you haven’t said more than hello in the two months that they’ve been in the neighborhood, host a dinner for them!
  • Go rock climbing or participate in an adventurous sport. This will help you combat irrational fears and become more confident in your abilities.

Even if these actions seem scary, you will get through them. And who knows, they may allow you to discover something you’re good at that you didn’t previously know!

6) Realize That You’re Not Alone

Think that you’re the only one who’s ever felt self-conscious? Think again. At some point, we have all struggled with self-confidence. It’s perfectly natural. Even the seemingly most confident people have their insecurities.

Take comfort in this fact. You’re not alone. Most people are worried about how others see them. But you can lessen, and even completely free yourself, from self-conscious thinking by changing your patterns of dealing with problems.

You won’t gain self-confidence overnight. It’s often a slow, gradual journey, but you will get there by altering your outlook one day at a time.
